I spent the last weekend of September pretending it was July: ice cream, bike riding and lazy strolls. I was on Nantucket, a weekend trip that was supposed to happen over the summer but booked hotels and busy schedules postponed the trip until fall.
Riding a tandem bike was a first for me and it was a blast! It’s worth noting though, that it had its challenges too. It required teamwork, communication, balance and effort from both parties. At first, it was easy to coast along on the quiet back roads but as we turned to avoid potholes, rode uphill and even went off-road we found that it was going to take more than peddling to not only make it work; but keep it fun. I saw the resemblance to a relationship immediately.
Relationships require teamwork, effort from both parties, communication and balance- whether they are friendships or romantic relationships. As each mile passed and we got better and better at letting each other know when we were switching gears, slowing down, speeding up or making a sharp right turn onto a dirt path because, why not? (That’s what I get for letting my man have the seat up front 🙂 ) In relationships, going through the motions, just peddling along may be enough to make it work, but is it enough to keep it happy? Fun? Exciting? Bumps in the road are inevitable, but working through them as a team is rewarding and even fun.
Twenty miles later we had sore saddles, tired legs and full hearts. Project weekend adventures: completed.
